Message of condolence received by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II from
His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales

12 December 2016

Messages of condolence have been pouring in for the Coptic Orthodox Community worldwide as a result of a brutal bombing which claimed the lives of 25, mostly women and children, at St Peter’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Cairo.

A message from HRH The Prince of Wales was sent to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, saying:

"I wanted to send to Your Holiness, and to all members of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt and across the world, my most profound sympathy over the unbearably inhuman attack on the chapel adjacent to St Mark's Cathedral.  Those guilty of this terrible crime are clearly seeking, in their brutal way, to create divisions within Egyptian society, as we have seen only on Friday with the barbaric murder of six policemen in Giza. The steadfastness of Egyptians in the face of such appalling hatred and extremism is greatly to be admired.

I can only begin to imagine the dreadful shock and grief that Copts, and indeed all Egyptians, must be feeling and my heart goes out to the families and loved ones of those who have been killed and wounded.

I wanted to assure Your Holiness that Copts everywhere, and especially in Egypt, are in my thoughts and special prayers as they try to cope with the loss, pain and fear that the attack has inflicted upon them."

In response to the message of condolence from HRH The Prince of Wales and other individuals, Church bodies, faith groups and organisations, His Grace Bishop Angaelos, General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom said:

“On a day of great concern and sadness for Coptic Christians around the world, it is truly heartening to receive warm messages of support and condolence from friends across a broad spectrum of society. Atrocities such as these cause much pain to all affected, yet they also shine light on the immense love, care and solidarity expressed by many who feel they share a common humanity, whatever their background, faith or walk of life.

I am thankful for the message from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, who visited our community in 2013 to highlight the plight of Christians in the Middle East, and for his ongoing support for all who suffer as a result of oppression and marginalisation. We pray that God continue to provide hope, light and support to all who are suffering, as we also pray for those who continue to aspire to be that support, that hope and that light.”

Freedom of Faith

Comment by His Grace Bishop Angaelos, General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom

The freedom to choose and practice one’s faith is a fundamental right for all under international law, and yet we continue to see numerous tragic cases around the world in which that same right is non-existent, and exercising this freedom is punishable, sometimes even by death.

As Christians we believe that all are created in the Image and likeness of God, with His Image intrinsic to our human nature, which lays the foundation for respect and love for all. Within this nature, we believe that all have been given the freedom to choose and live according to those choices, and while freedom of religion is one choice that is central to the lives of millions across the world, it continues to be widely violated.

As recently reported by Amnesty International, Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag is a Christian Sudanese woman in Sudan who was sentenced "to death by hanging for ‘apostasy’" after refusing to renounce her Christian Faith and convert to Islam, although she has lived as a Christian since her childhood. Meriam, who is twenty seven years old and is eight months pregnant, was reportedly also sentenced to "flogging for ‘adultery’" because her marriage to a Christian man is considered unlawful. This, among other cases, sheds light on the intensity of the struggle facing so many around the world who strive to merely practice their faith.

The recent and deeply-disturbing development of the kidnapped schoolgirls in Nigeria who have reportedly been forced to convert to Islam is yet another incident that has shocked the international community, and in which this brutal violation of this fundamental human right is also causing great distress to families who anxiously await the return of their children.

Egyptian Christians know the effect of religious persecution against numeric minority communities in the Middle East all too well, with the emergence of pockets of intolerant Islamism that have led to more attacks on Christians in the eighteen months following the popular uprising of 2011, than over the twenty years prior. This intolerance has not only affected Christians however, as the first attacks after the uprising were on Sufi shrines, and on a separate occasion Shi’ite Muslims were also senselessly killed in the streets. That said, as Christians we do not live defeated but strive to advocate for all who suffer persecution, oppression and marginalisation, be they Christian or otherwise, man, woman, young or old.

The Baha’i community in Iran is likewise no stranger to religious persecution, and 14 May 2014 marks the sixth anniversary of the imprisonment of seven Baha’i leaders, detained for carrying out ‘peaceful activities on behalf of their communities’.

Here in Britain we pride ourselves on our multi-cultural community that seeks to accommodate and provide for all, and rightly so. We cannot however ignore the fact that, for many across the Middle East in particular, the concept of citizenship, justice and equality are not rights available to everyone, and are very much dependent on a person’s religious affiliation.

We must not forget those around the world who continue to face intense persecution for merely attempting to live out their chosen faith. We also continue to pray and advocate for the rights of these individuals and communities so that this God-given freedom may be exercised within the context of peaceful co-existence and cohesion. This will then ensure a spirit of true reconciliation and acceptance within political states and communities that respect all as equal individuals with equal rights.

Praying for safety in Egypt

A message from His Grace Bishop Angaelos, General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom

As early reports emerge of a bombing and shootings in Egypt as Egyptians prepare to vote on the constitutional referendum, the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom is dedicating three days of prayer (14-16 January) for peace and safety.

With Egyptians venturing out to proactively live this new spirit of ownership and citizenship, we pray they are safe in doing so and that they see Egypt move to the next stage of this constitutional and democratic process.
In light of all the happenings of the past three years, what has been most prevalent is that Egyptians desire a new start and a nation void of discrimination and inequality, pursuing God-given rights of dignity and freedom at every level. We pray for protection for them all as they pursue these honourable ends, confident in God’s protection over this ancient and blessed land and her people.

His Grace Bishop Makarios, General Bishop of the Diocese of Minya in Egypt was fired upon by assailants on the morning of 30 September 2013.

Bishop Makarios and those accompanying him were fired upon by assailants on 30 September 2013 at 7am while they travelled to offer condolences to the family of Karim Samir Lamaee who was killed during recent attacks on Christians. Speaking to His Grace Bishop Angaelos, General Bishop of The Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom, Bishop Makarios said:

“We are all safe, but it is unfortunate that this can happen during a time of healing. This is an indication that while steps are being taken towards reconciliation, there are those who still want to delay us.”

Commenting on today’s events, Bishop Angaelos said:

"Speaking to Bishop Makarios earlier today, I am relieved to hear that he and those with him are unharmed by this attack, I am however greatly concerned at the level of criminal activity and lawlessness that continues to be prevalent in Minya. As the lives of those who seek to live peacefully and establish steps towards reconciliation are continuously threatened, we reiterate the need for a sufficient level of law and order be restored because every Egyptian deserves to receive equal protection under that law. We continue to pray for peace and healing in Egypt at this formative time."

The Coptic Orthodox Church of Archangel Michael in the village where the attack took place has been closed for 10 years due to violent acts against it, and in a statement released by the Minya Diocese, it rejects claims that there was return gunfire.

His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, 118th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of All Africa on the holy Apostolic See of Saint Mark received the title ‘Defender of Pro Oriente’ by the Pro Oriente Foundation on 27 May 2013 during his twelve day visit to Austria.

His Holiness Pope Tawadros II was awarded the title of ‘Defender of Pro Oriente’ by His Eminence Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Cardinal Archbishop of Vienna during a ceremony held by the Pro Oriente foundation in Vienna’s Archbishop’s Palace. The ceremony marks the tenth anniversary of the official recognition of the Coptic Orthodox Church by the Austrian parliament.

The Pro Oriente Foundation was established in 1964 by Cardinal Franz König (1905-2004) in order to maintain the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches.

The award comes just weeks after Pope Tawadros visited His Holiness Pope Francis, 40 years after his predecessor, His Holiness the late Pope Shenouda III, who signed the official Christological agreement with the late Pope Paul VI.
In his address, Pope Tawadros said:

‘Unity is the norm and essence of our Christian identity and character, and separation is the exception to that norm’

His Grace Bishop Angaelos, General Bishop of The Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom, accompanying His Holiness in Austria, said:

'We have seen yet another historic event as this award comes only weeks after His Holiness Pope Tawadros was received by His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican. This visit, among those previous, indicates the firm commitment on all parts toward a realised unity and continued ecumenical dialogue and relations.'

During his 12-day visit to Austria, Pope Tawadros will consecrate five Coptic churches, deliver numerous sermons, and on 28 May 2013, meet with Federal President Heinz Fischer at Hofburg Palace. On Saturday 1 June, His Holiness will pray the Divine Liturgy in St Mary Cathedral in celebration of the great Coptic feast ‘The entry of the Holy Family in Egypt’. On Sunday 2nd June Pope Tawadros will visit the Syrian Orthodox Church of St. Efrem in the 13th District of Vienna before returning to Cairo.

A response to the Government Equalities Office consultation on same–sex civil marriage from the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom

A response to the Government Equalities Office consultation on same–sex civil marriage from the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom

In response to the current government consultation, the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom cannot support the proposal relating to same-sex civil marriage.

As a traditional Christian Church with its foundation firmly set upon divine Scripture, ‘marriage’ has a very particular meaning as outlined in the book of Genesis and reaffirmed in the Gospel of St. Matthew “…a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Marriage, as it stands, benefits society in many ways by being a monogamous loving relationship that allows for a wonderful union that potentially brings forth a new life, and celebrates the distinguishing and complementary differences between a man and a woman. ‘Marriage’ is by no means a term that discriminates but rather, distinguishes one type of union from another. With this in mind we would ask the Government Equalities Office to carefully consider the following:

  1. While this current Consultation attempts to reassure by claiming that “the Government does not propose to open up religious marriage to same-sex couples”, the term ‘marriage’ in itself is one that has been utilised within a religious context for millennia, and applied to a sanctified and Sacramental union between a man and a woman. The mere redefinition of this term as proposed would indeed change the meaning as commonly defined and understood, and would in turn place unnecessary pressure and expectation upon religious institutions to move in the same direction.
  2. There is no apparent benefit to society arising from the redefinition of ‘marriage’ to incorporate ‘civil marriage’, as Civil Partnerships currently allow for equal rights and responsibilities. To alter this definition is to undoubtedly directly impact religious institutions, undermine the sanctity and uniqueness of ‘marriage’ and infringe upon freedom of religious practice.
  3. From a legal perspective, the presence of potentially ambiguous laws and loose terminology surrounding this issue is likely to lead to an imposition on religious institutions, especially in considering the various recent rulings of the European courts on matters of state security, deportation and other such issues that have infringed upon practice within the United Kingdom.
  4. It must be noted that the use of inaccurate and emotive language referring to a “ban on same-sex marriage”, erroneously implies that such partnerships once existed and were then “banned”, and this is clearly not the case.

Based upon the observations above, we would urge the Government Equalities Office to consider the potential effects and side-effects of this matter very carefully, and find favourably with respect to leaving the ancient sanctified and honourable institution of marriage as it has stood for millennia.
